The interior of the Basilica
The basilica has a classroom with 3 naves whose columns are of classical derivation: the capitals are Roman and the arches that the columns form are round.
At the end of the central nave is the apse which has a wonderful mosaic whose subject is the same as that of the facade: the Christ Pantocrator sits on a throne between Mary and St.
Miniato.
In addition, the four evangelists are represented in their typical symbolism.
S.
Matteo is the angel, S.
Luca the ox, S.
Giovanni the eagle and S.
Marco the lion.
The church is spread over three levels: - the floor - the crypt (where the saint's relics are kept) - the presbytery, which is the area for the clergy and is higher than the naves.
In the presbytery there is the pulpit from which the sermons were made.
The ceiling of the church is made of stuccoed wooden trusses made by Lombard workers.
