Description of the facade of the basilica
S.Miniato al Monte is one of the most characteristic examples of Tuscan Romanesque, a style strongly influenced by the classical tradition.
The church is decorated both inside and outside with white and green marble.
The façade is characterized by geometric compartments that create a symmetrical design, is divided into two orders and has numerous classical elements: the lower part is made up of 5 round semicircular arches, supported by half-columns with Corinthian capitals; the upper floor is characterized by a square body, divided into three parts by pilasters, with a classical tympanum window in the center.
The 13th century mosaic, which shows a Christ on a throne blessing between the Virgin and St.
Miniato, surmounts the window.
The structure ends with fake arches surmounted by a tympanum, decorated with marble inlays.
To crown the facade there is a copper eagle symbol of the Art of the Calimala (guild of wool merchants).
